John S. Reidy AB '61, MBA '63 has approached gift giving at Harvard in
a way that both benefits many parts of the University and is in line with
his values and interests.
John established a Harvard-managed charitable
remainder trust that will supplement his retirement income. At the
end of the trust's term, scholarship funds at the College and Graduate
School of Education will receive the majority of the remainder, with other
charitable organizations of his choosing receiving smaller shares.
Also, John's Harvard-managed charitable lead
trust makes current payments
to scholarship funds at the College and professorships at the Graduate
School of Education.
Additionally, the Business School, Friends of Harvard Football, Friends
of Harvard Baseball, the Harvard Museum of Natural History, and Memorial
Church benefit from this lead trust. At the end of the trust's term, the
remaining funds will be dispersed among nieces, nephews, and friends,
with favorable tax savings.
Among other reasons, John was inspired to make his gifts by the recent
University Campaign. "I wanted the pleasure of doing it now,"
he said, "while I could enjoy seeing how my gifts, especially the
lead trust, benefit Harvard."
