Charitable Remainder Trusts to be Invested in the Endowment As a result of a special ruling from the IRS, qualifying charitable remainder trusts can be invested in trust units with the University that will provide each trust the exact same performance and distribution rate as the endowment. In effect, qualifying trusts invested in the endowment will benefit from its performance accordingly. To qualify, trusts must distribute 100% of their charitable remainder to Harvard. For trusts that distribute a portion of their remainder to outside charities, Harvard Management Company has established a tax efficient alternative that should provide remainder trust beneficiaries with a considerably lower tax rate on their distributions.
