Teaching Values Through Philanthropy

There are numerous ways to teach values to your family through your philanthropy. Some families involve their children and grandchildren in the philanthropic decision making process through their family foundation or donor advised fund. Other families provide children (young and old) with a specific amount of money to give away annually. Still other families bring their children to charitable events or alumni gatherings to help them learn about the parents’ favorite causes.

Wealth in Families, a book by Charles W. Collier, Harvard’s Senior Philanthropic Advisor, can be a helpful resource with your own planning. This book addresses many of the questions of concern to families of wealth.
